Modify the interface language

NOTE: We are in the process of modifying the file structure and configuration for many Bitnami stacks. On account of these changes, the file paths stated in this guide may change depending on whether your Bitnami stack uses native Linux system packages (Approach A), or if it is a self-contained installation (Approach B). To identify your Bitnami installation type and what approach to follow, run the command below:

 $ test ! -f "/opt/bitnami/common/bin/openssl" && echo "Approach A: Using system packages." || echo "Approach B: Self-contained installation."

The output of the command indicates which approach (A or B) is used by the installation, and will allow you to identify the paths, configuration and commands to use in this guide. Refer to the FAQ for more information on these changes.

By default, phpBB uses English as the primary language, but you can download, install and use phpBB in other languages, like Spanish. In order to download a new phpBB Language Pack, follow these steps:

  • Browse to the Language Packs site and download the language to use on your phpBB installation.

  • After downloading it, unzip the .ZIP file and paste the language/ and styles/ directories into your phpBB installation.

NOTE: Depending on your installation type, the language and styles folders will be in one of the following locations:

  • Approach A (Bitnami installations using system packages): /opt/bitnami/phpbb/language and /opt/bitnami/phpbb/styles

  • Approach B (Self-contained Bitnami installations): /opt/bitnami/apps/phpbb/htdocs/language and /opt/bitnami/apps/phpbb/htdocs/styles

  • Access the Administration Control Panel and navigate to the “System -> General tasks -> Language packs” section.

  • Review the language packs that have been uploaded to your phpBB installation. Those which have not yet been installed will include an “Install” link. Clicking this link will install the corresponding language pack.

  • To activate the language as the default language, click the “General” tab and select the “Board Configuration -> Board Settings” section. Change the “Default Language” to your default language in the drop-down menu and save the changes.
