Upgrade WordPress

Before running the commands shown on this page, you should load the Bitnami stack environment by executing the installdir/use_APPNAME script (Linux and MacOS) or by clicking the shortcut in the Start Menu under “Start -> Bitnami APPNAME Stack -> Application console” (Windows). On OS X VMs, the installation directory is /opt/bitnami and OS X VM users can click the “Open Terminal” button to run commands. Learn more about the Bitnami stack environment and about OS X VMs.

It is strongly recommended to create a backup before starting the update process. If you have important data, create and try to restore a backup to ensure that everything works properly.

You can update WordPress easily from its administration panel, as follows:

  • Log in to WordPress using the administrator account.
  • Select the “Dashboard -> Updates” menu item.

    WordPress update

  • Review the resulting page to see if WordPress needs an update. If an update is available, you can install it by clicking the “Update Now” button.

    WordPress update

To update WordPress using the WP-CLI tool, follow these steps:

  • Execute WP-CLI to perform the update as the root user:

    $ sudo bin/wp core update --allow-root

  • As that command changes the ownership of some files to root, you need to reset the file ownership and then restart Apache for the update to take effect:

    $ sudo chown -R daemon installdir/apps/wordpress/htdocs
    $ sudo installdir/ctlscript.sh restart apache
