Understand the default cluster configuration

The Bitnami Multi-Tier Solution for etcd uses multiple VMs in a peer-to-peer topology.

It has a masterless architecture which means that any node can accept any request (read, write, or delete) and route it to the correct node even if the data is not stored in that node. The cluster is configured as follows:

  • Authentication: RBAC authentication is enabled. Only authenticated requests will work.
    • Default username: root
  • Security: TLS communications encryption across peer nodes is enabled by default.

TIP: The recommended cluster size for an etcd cluster is 3, 5, or 7 nodes. In theory, there is no limit to the number of nodes but a higher number of nodes could affect the write performance. Furthermore, having an odd number of nodes in the cluster guarantees a higher fault tolerance.
