Configure SMTP for outbound emails

Open Atrium uses Drupal’s email configuration for outbound email. To configure outbound email, follow these steps:

  • Log in to the application as an administrator.
  • Select the “Admin -> Modules” menu item.
  • In the list of modules, find and activate the “SMTP Authentication Support” module.

  • Click “Save configuration” to save your changes.

  • In the list of modules, find the activated “SMTP Authentication Support” module and click its “Configure” link.

  • In the module configuration page, turn the module on. Then, enter details for the SMTP server to be used for outbound email. For example, to configure a Gmail account, you could use the settings below. Replace USERNAME and PASSWORD with your Gmail account username and password respectively.

    • SMTP Server - smtp.gmail.com
    • SMTP port - 465
    • Use encrypted protocol - Use SSL
    • Username - USERNAME@gmail.com
    • Password - PASSWORD
    • Email from address - USERNAME@gmail.com
    • Email from name - your name

  • Enter a test email address to verify that the mail configuration is correct.

  • Click “Save configuration” to save your changes.

To configure the application to use the SMTP service provided by Amazon Simple Email Service (SES), refer to the guide on using Amazon SES.

To configure the application to use other third-party SMTP services for outgoing email, such as SendGrid, refer to the FAQ.
